How to enable JavaScript

The result shows whether JavaScript works in your browser. If it says Disabled, JavaScript is turned off, and most websites won’t work properly: menus won’t open, forms won’t send and many pages stay blank.

How to enable JavaScript

  • Chrome: Settings → Privacy and security → Site settings → JavaScript, then select “Sites can use JavaScript”.
  • Edge: Settings → Cookies and site permissions → JavaScript, then turn on “Allowed”.
  • Firefox: JavaScript is always on unless it was turned off in about:config. Search for javascript.enabled and set it to true.
  • Safari on Mac: Safari → Settings → Security, then tick “Enable JavaScript”.
  • Safari on iPhone and iPad: Settings → Apps → Safari → Advanced, then turn on JavaScript.
  • Chrome on Android: Chrome menu → Settings → Site settings → JavaScript.

Menu names can differ slightly between browser versions and languages.

What JavaScript does

JavaScript is the programming language built into every browser. Websites use it to react to what you do without reloading the page: opening menus, checking forms, loading new content as you scroll, playing video and running web apps such as email and maps.

When JavaScript is blocked by an extension

Script blockers, ad blockers and privacy extensions can stop JavaScript on some sites while it stays enabled in your browser. If only certain pages break, check your extensions before changing browser settings.

Many sites also need cookies and local storage to keep you signed in and remember your settings.

Frequently asked questions

Is it safe to enable JavaScript?

Yes. JavaScript runs in a sandbox that keeps websites away from your files and other tabs, and nearly every modern website requires it. Keeping your browser updated matters more for security than disabling JavaScript.

Why does a site say JavaScript is disabled when it's enabled?

An extension such as a script or ad blocker may be stopping that site’s scripts, or the page failed to load completely. Pause the extension for that site and reload the page.

Can I enable JavaScript for only some websites?

Yes. Chrome and Edge let you add sites to an allowed or blocked list in the JavaScript settings, and extensions such as NoScript give per-site control in Firefox.
