How websites learn your device model

The device model your browser reports is shown in the result, such as Pixel 8 or SM-S921B. Only Android phones and tablets share it, and only in Chromium-based browsers such as Chrome, Edge and Samsung Internet. On computers and Apple devices the result is empty.

Why the model is no longer in the user agent

Android browsers used to put the model straight into the user agent, for example SM-S921B Build/UP1A. To reduce fingerprinting, Chrome replaced it with a generic K. The model is now available only through User-Agent Client Hints, and only when a site asks for it, which this page does in your browser.

Model names and codes

Many manufacturers report a model code rather than the marketing name. For example, SM-S921B is a Samsung Galaxy S24. Searching for the code online quickly reveals the device and its regional variant.

Why computers and iPhones don’t report a model

  • Desktops and laptops: browsers don’t expose hardware models on computers at all.
  • iPhone and iPad: Safari and every other iOS browser report only the device family, such as iPhone or iPad. iPads even identify as a Mac by default.

Websites can still tell whether you’re on a phone, tablet or computer from your device type.

Frequently asked questions

Why does it say Not detected?
